What we are
doing As architects and urban planners Shillam + Smith are exited by the results of this report because it vindicates an approach we have been advocating for ten years. Shillam + Smith are already working with forward thinking clients to develop high quality, high density, flexible, mixed use regeneration schemes. These schemes are receiving support from the communities in which they are based. Case studies These projects illustrate how recommendations of The Urban Task Force can be interpreted in real situations. King Square Islington: £13M A 14 hectare site on the very edge of the City of London. Our development strategy for London Borough of Islington increased the density of development from 250 to 440 habitable rooms per hectare, as well as suggesting a widening of uses on the site. Careful consultation resulted in a positive response to the transfer of tenancy. Islington Council has included this design as part of their development strategy. Most privately owned sites in the area have now received planning permissions for higher density schemes.

| Handsworth Redevelopment Strategy A Vision for Westminster Media Village Birmingham: £8M Launched on 21st July 99, this scheme illustrates a spatial urban design. Selective demolition of, mainly derelict properties, provides space for a new urban square and gives access to neglected backlands. Here we re-configure an existing terrace in order to get a better access to the houses. We also build a run of new flexible live/work units which introduces a new house-type to the neighbourhood and which should bring employment. A new training centre and mediatheque provide a focus for alternative education and youth training. We propose concentrating on computer skills and media training - something which already attracts youth interest. The project has
received a good response from local people and the development proposal goes to committee
