John Atkin's recent work has been influenced by the rag trade pattern blocks which he
found. Shillam+Smith 3, in the heart of Central London's fashion district, is an
appropriate location for the work.
It is an illustration of our thesis that each neighbourhood is defined by the events
and industries that take place there. Urban regeneration is about finding a
disctinctivenss in areas which may not yet have such richness.
"The work of John Atkin is a distillation of the experience of place and
materials. It has its basis in a strange mixture of the novel and the mundane; in the
sensory delight of travel to new and distant places, in the agglomeration process of
living one's life, and in the things he finds around him each day in the studio. Like the
majority of the most abiding artists of this century the studio is the locus of his
creativity. It is the crucible into which he pours imaginative and emotional energy stored
up from elsewhere."
